About

WebEnglish

is a curated collection of resources for teachers of English who wish to use authentic contents with the help of ICT in their English classrooms. This free website offers inspiration, lesson plans and authentic teaching materials for CEFR levels A1-B1 (year 1 to Eng5 in Sweden). Teachers from all over the world are welcome to use the links and subscribe to WebEnglish.

The need to create WebEnglish arose in 2014 from the realisation that there were no printed school books that complied with the Swedish Curriculum, Lgr11. Therefore, all the links in WebEnglish are chosen in compliance with the intentions of the Swedish Curriculum. As many classes still do not have 1:1 computers, most materials only require one computer and a projector in the classroom.

Themes

The key feature in WebEnglish is the themes. There are enough themes to cover the whole curriculum for levels A1.1-B1, year 1-9, and Eng5 in the Swedish School system. There is also a 13-unit Course Plan for teen beginners (A1) who start learning English at this age. If there is any theme you and your students would like to be added, you can always make a request.

Levels

Young Beginner / Elementary / Intermediate / Teen Beginner / B1 levels. There is a list of carefully chosen activities for each level, divided into different categories, e.g. reading, writing, listening, speaking and form focus. For further inspiration, there are suggestions for classroom literature and films/videos.

Teaching Matters

WebEnglish posts site news, inspirational texts and video clips for teachers. The latest ones are always on the Homepage,  Facebook, Twitter, and in the newsletters to our subscribers. The archive is in Teaching Matters.

Calendar

WebEnglish collects materials about the major annual holidays and celebrations in the Calendar. There are some recommended materials behind the actual date in the calendar and/or a link to a theme page about the topic of the day.

Planning Page

It is recommended that teachers collaborate with their students when choosing the themes to study at the beginning of each term. In the Planning Page, there is a simple, 8-step instruction to follow to get the students more motivated in their own learning.

Digital Tools

The idea with WebEnglish has always been to incorporate digital tools into the teaching and learning of English. Now that the updated Swedish Curriculum stipulates digitalisation to be the responsibility of all teachers, this aim has become even more central. WebEnglish is following the trends and development of learning tools.  We will share the most relevant news in Teaching Matters, Facebook and Twitter as well as keep continuously adding links to the Digital Tools.

Privacy

WebEnglish uses “double-opting” registration process: When we receive your registration request for the WebEnglish newsletter, your name and e-mail address are collected. To ensure that you were the one who requested the registration, we send you an e-mail and your explicit consent is received when you respond to this. If you don’t respond to the opt-in email we may remind you once or twice within a two-year period before we remove your data. You may receive an e-mail in case of a malfunction. In every newsletter, there is an option for you to cancel your subscription at any time. Your data will be removed through periodical reviews at the start of the term within two years. Our mailing list is stored on our server at Loopia. Our partner involved in sending the newsletter is Wysija SARL. We have ensured that our partners only use your data for finding fault in their services to us. You have the right to request information about our processing of your data including removal of it. Please contact [email protected] for such requests.

Cookies

WebEnglish collects a number of cookies from our users for various reasons, not least to track our own performance – but also to let us serve you content tailored to your own specifications, hopefully improving your overall experience of the site. Amongst other things, cookies allow us to calculate how many visitors we have – anonymously, of course – and how long they stay on our site. Read more about our Cookie Policy.

Technical Compatibility

Webenglish works well on any relatively modern device used in schools; PC, Mac, Chromebook, Mobile phones, iPads. It utilises Responsive Web Design methodology (an alternative explanation in Swedish available here). Internet browsers and plugin software (e.g. Adobe) to be used should be of the latest version. That is the golden rule of browser security, anyway.

Operational Accessibility

The website server is located at a well-reputed cloud provider in Sweden, Inleed. No 100% guarantee can be made on uptime. An aspiration is that planned disruptive operational changes are made after Teachers’ Office hours (06.00 – 23.00, Sunday to Friday in our house). Non-disruptive changes as updates of links and minor web design changes occur all the time. Considering the voluntary characteristics of support it may take some unpredicted time to restore the website in case of a total service disruption caused by external factors, e.g. failure of cloud provider services or Denial Of Service attacks.

Operational Excellence

This free and voluntary sharing initiative depends on free or low-cost services for its performance. This does not exclude that utmost care has been taken to select services and software that deliver good user experience and security relative to cost, e.g. Link Library, Content Viewer, Elementor, WordPress.com and Cloudflare.com. User experience is tested at webpagetest.org.

Contact

For any opinion or request you can contact us at any time by e-mail to [email protected], PM on Facebook or on Twitter. You can also comment on any link or post, where there is a comment-box.
