WebEnglish.se Tips for September

Thank you, Subscriber for being a WebEnglish.se Friend!

This year, I plan to give you suggestions for recommended themes for each month. When I was teaching younger students, we often studied Animals as one of the first themes in Autumn. WebEnglish.se has three theme pages about the Animal Kingdom: Animals for year 1-3 (A1.1), Wild Animals for year 3-5 (A1) and Endangered Animals for year 5-9 (A2-B1)

As Autumn starts to show its colours, it's a good time to bring up the themes Autumn-Fall (yr 2-6, A1) and Weather (yr 1-6, A1).
For intermediate students (yr 7-9, A2-B1), WebEnglish.se recommends Gun Violence in Schools (in the US) which has been an unfortunate news item throughout the year. You might wish to talk about it together with Bullying, which often lies in the background.
As also mentioned below, Native American Day is at the end of the month, so you may wish to work with the theme of Native Americans (yr 7-9, A2-B1) for a week or two.

From the Calendar

  • The month of September starts on Monday with Labor Day (Sept 2nd). WebEnglish.se has some activities both for Elementary and Intermediate students to learn about Labor Day.
  • International Literacy Day is on Sunday (Sept 8th) this year. WebEnglish.se suggests that you start a routine of reading aloud to your students - whatever their age - any way that suits both you and them.
  • Your students were probably not born yet on 9/11 (Sept 11th), which doesn't mean that it wouldn't be good to learn some general knowledge of the day that shook the world.
  • What better way to inspire your reluctant readers than presenting them with a Banned Book. The week starting on Sept 22th is a National Banned Books Week in the USA.
  • The same week on Wednesday (Sept 25th) is the day for the World's Largest Lesson. It was launched in 2015 to share the Global Goals for Sustainable Development with every child.
  • The same day, Sept 25th is also Native American Day in the US. WebEnglish.se has a Theme Page about Native Americans with a lot of lesson materials suitable for intermediate-level students (yr 7-9, A2-B1).
  • The last Sunday in September (Sept 29th) is the European Day of Languages. On that day I used to celebrate all my students' native (and other) languages, not just the Europeans'.
