Columbus Day has traditionally been celebrated in the US on the second Monday in October commemorating the day when Christopher Columbus landed on the island of San Salvador in today’s Bahamas on October 12th in 1492.
In recent years, however, as awareness over the disrespect and cruelty acted upon the native inhabitants by the invading Europeans has awakened, many people would like to change the name of Columbus Day into Indigenous People’s Day.
WebEnglish.se has an updated theme page on Columbus Day for you and your students to study and to discuss the propriety of the celebration this coming week.
